HANOI, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- The market capitalization of Vietnam's stock market approximated 6 quadrillion Vietnamese dong (246.7 billion U.S. dollars) in 2023, equivalent to about 62 percent of the country's gross domestic product in 2022, the Vietnam News reported on Thursday, citing the Ministry of Finance.

According to the report, the market capitalization recorded a 9.5 percent year-on-year increase.

Deputy Minister of Finance Nguyen Duc Chi said in 2023, accounts of new investors increased by over 350,000, raising the total number of securities accounts to nearly 7.4 million, equivalent to 7.5 percent of the population, which is higher than the 5 percent target set in the plan on restructuring stock and insurance markets by 2020 with orientations toward 2030.

As of Dec. 29, the last working day of 2023, Vietnam's benchmark VN-Index reached 1,129.93 points, up over 12 percent from the end of 2022.

After a period of decline and stabilization in 2022-2023, Vietnam's stock market is expected to witness significant growth opportunities in 2024, local media reported.

According to experts, lower interest rates and improved performance of listed enterprises are among key factors driving this positive outlook.
