ST. PETERSBURG, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Members of the Commonwealth of Independence States (CIS) support the further expansion of the use of national currencies in mutual settlements, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday.

The transition to the use of national currencies in mutual settlements will ensure the economic and financial sovereignty of CIS member countries, Putin said during an informal meeting of leaders of the CIS countries in Russian city St. Petersburg.

Russia will continue to promote this work during its presidency of the CIS in 2024, he said.

According to Putin, the trade turnover between CIS countries has shown steady growth this year. Data shows that in the first 10 months of 2023, the trade turnover increased by 2 percent to 83.7 billion U.S. dollars.

Putin and other CIS leaders agreed to continue strengthening cooperation in economic, cultural and humanitarian fields, including combating attempts to falsify history and glorify Nazism.
