63.5 kg raw opium seized in central Myanmar

YANGON, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's authorities have seized 63.5 kg raw opium in the country's Mandalay and Sagaing regions, said a release by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) on Saturday.

Acting on a tipoff, anti-narcotic police searched the parcel of a woman at a bus station in Aungmyaythazan Township of Mandalay Region on Friday and confiscated 45.5 kg of raw opium, the CCDAC said. The suspected woman was arrested for the case, it said.

In addition, police also searched a passenger car near the Yadanabon Bridge in Sagaing of Sagaing Region on Friday and seized 18 kg of raw opium, it said. Two women suspects were arrested, it said.

The seized narcotics had a street value of approximately 67.95 million kyats (over 32,357 U.S. dollars), it said.

The suspects were charged under the country's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, it added.
