JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior South African official said Thursday that the country is likely to have a festive season with lights on thanks to improvements in the performance of power supply.

"South Africa is unlikely to have load shedding during this festive season due to low demand and improvements in the performance of power stations," said Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa at a media briefing in the country's administrative capital of Pretoria.

The available power generation capacity is sitting at 27,700 megawatts (MW), while the demand is averaging 24,695 MW, said the minister, adding that there is some reduction in the level of planned maintenance at power stations.

South African power utility Eskom suspended load shedding a week ago, and their staff will be working during the festive season to keep the lights on, Ramokgopa said.
