BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Gustavo Costas promised to "take Racing to the top" on Monday after his confirmation as the Argentine club's new manager.

The 60-year-old replaces Sebastian Grazzini, who took over the role on an interim basis following the resignation of Fernando Gago in October.

"I think that the goal for everyone here is to win international trophies," Costas told reporters.

"We want to be able to compete with Boca [Juniors] and River [Plate]. I'm not afraid to say that. My aim is to fight for important trophies and take Racing to the top."

Costas has been out of work since parting ways with Bolivia's national team in October.

This will be his third spell in charge of Racing, having also led the Buenos Aires side in 1999-2000 and 2007.

Racing are one of Argentina's most successful clubs with 18 top-flight titles since their inception in 1903. Only three of those triumphs, however, have come since 1966.

Despite an outstanding regular season campaign, Racing failed to reach the semifinals of Argentina's 2023 Primera Division second phase, which ended on Saturday when Rosario Central beat Platense in the final.
