JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- An unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from past wars went off in east Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, leaving three dead and injuring seven others, provincial police spokesman Hafiz Mawlawi Abdul Basir Zabili said Wednesday.
The incident took place in Shirzad district on Tuesday afternoon when a child found a toy-like object and took it back home, which suddenly exploded, killing three children on the spot and injuring seven others including three women, the spokesman added.
Afghanistan is reportedly one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world as the mines and UXO left over from more than four decades of wars and civil strife claim the lives of dozens, mostly children, every month in the war-ravaged country. ■
