CANBERRA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Australia's national science agency has announced research grants for five cutting-edge quantum research projects.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) on Tuesday granted five projects a combined 3.6 million Australian dollars (2.3 million U.S. dollars) in funding to pursue research that solves industry challenges while growing the country's quantum technology industry.

Quantum technology is an emerging field of physics and engineering harnessing the power of subatomic particles to solve challenges in industries including health, finance, energy, communications and pharmaceuticals.

The five projects receiving grants under the CSIRO's Next Generation Quantum Graduates Program (NGQGP) were chosen by an international team of experts in the field. They will run out of 11 Australian universities.

According to Australia's quantum roadmap, which was published by the CSIRO in 2020, commercializing quantum technologies could be a 6 billion Australian dollar industry in the country by 2045 with 19,400 jobs in the field.
