BEIRUT, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and 11 others injured on Thursday in Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, Lebanese military sources told Xinhua.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that three Hezbollah fighters were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the central sector of southern Lebanon.

The sources added that two civilians were killed in the Israeli artillery shelling on the outskirts of the village of Rmeish in the central sector, and 10 students were injured after an Israeli raid targeted an area near their school in the village of Kunin.

An additional civilian was wounded by an Israeli artillery shelling that hit Tallet al-Hamamis in southeast Lebanon, according to the sources.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Resistance, the military wing of Hezbollah, said its fighters carried out on Thursday a series of attacks on 11 Israeli sites and gatherings, including the site of Mitat facing the southern village of Halta, killing an Israeli and injuring another.

Since Oct. 8, the Lebanon-Israel border has witnessed increased tensions after Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets toward Israel in support of the Hamas surprise attack on Israel the previous day.

The clashes between Hezbollah and Israel have so far killed 137 people on the Lebanese side, including 94 Hezbollah members, a Lebanese army soldier, 14 members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and 27 civilians, according to security sources.
