WASHINGTON, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Defending champions Argentina have been drawn in Group A alongside Peru, Chile and either Canada or Trinidad & Tobago for next year's Copa America in the United States.

The tournament hosts, meanwhile, will contest Group C with Uruguay, Bolivia and Panama, while Group B consists of Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela and Jamaica.

Brazil headlines the final group, which also includes Colombia, Paraguay and either Costa Rica or Honduras.

"This Copa America will feature the reigning world champions [Argentina], a five-time world champion team [Brazil] and the first world champions [Uruguay]," South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) president Alejandro Dominguez said during the tournament draw in Miami on Thursday.

"The world's best player [Lionel Messi] will also be a part of it," he added.

Argentina, who are also the reigning World Cup champions, will open the tournament against either Canada or Trinidad & Tobago in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 20.

The Albiceleste cannot meet rivals Brazil or Uruguay before the final, which will be played in Miami Gardens on July 14.

The 2024 Copa America will mark only the second time that the event has been held outside South America. It was also the home of the centenary edition in 2016, which Chile won by beating Argentina on penalties in the final.

The 48th addition of international football's oldest continental tournament will be held in 14 U.S. cities and will feature 32 matches over 25 days.

Costa Rica will face Honduras and Canada will meet Trinidad & Tobago for the two remaining tournament slots. Both playoff fixtures will be held at Toyota stadium in Frisco, Texas, on March 23.
