MEXICO CITY, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Mexico international defender Jesus Angulo scored late as Tigres UANL took a step toward the Liga MX final with a 1-0 away win over Pumas UNAM on Thursday.
Pumas enjoyed long periods of dominance in the first hour before Santiago Trigos was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Rafael Carioca.
Angulo broke the deadlock on the 74th minute when he combined with Rafael before sending a long-range effort into the bottom-left corner.
The result means that Tigres need only a draw in the semifinal return leg in Monterrey on Sunday to advance to the final.
Tigres are hoping to become only the fourth team in history to win back-to-back Liga MX trophies, emulating Pumas in 2004, Leon in 2013-2014 and Atlas 2021-2022.
Club America are all but guaranteed a berth in the final after beating San Luis 5-0 away from home in the first leg of the other semifinal. ■
