MANILA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Philippines spent 107.97 billion pesos (1.95 billion U.S. dollars) on disaster mitigation in 2022, a 64.5 percent increase from that in 2021, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said Thursday.
Disaster risk reduction includes four areas: disaster prevention, disaster mitigation, disaster management, and disaster recovery. Among the four areas, the PSA said disaster mitigation posted the highest expenditure in 2022.
The PSA said the total disaster risk reduction expenses in 2022 amounted to 315.89 billion pesos (5.69 billion dollars), a 52.4 percent decrease from that in 2021.
On disaster prevention, the Philippines spent 77.98 billion pesos (1.41 billion dollars) in 2022, 50.4 percent lower than that in 2021.
The country spent 75.65 billion pesos (1.36 billion dollars) on disaster management in 2022, a decrease of 57.4 percent from that in 2021.
On disaster recovery, the expenditure reached 54.29 billion pesos (980 million dollars) in 2022, a 64.5 percent increase from that in 2021.
The World Risk Index 2022 put the Philippines at the top spot for the most disaster-prone country in the world. The archipelago country is frequently battered by powerful typhoons, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. ■
