VIENNA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on Monday opened here the 20th session of its General Conference, with calls for innovative industrial solutions to realize fair globalization.
Representatives from UNIDO member states are attending the biennial conference, which is themed "Fair Globalization: Innovative Solutions for the Industry of Tomorrow" and will run until Friday.
The meeting also brought together other high-level delegates from governments, industry, academia and financial institutions to discuss how inclusive and sustainable industrial development can support sustainable supply chains, limit climate breakdown and contribute to ending hunger worldwide, according to a statement from UNIDO.
"More global solidarity is needed. We need to rethink the global economy," UNIDO Director General Gerd Mueller said in his opening address. "We need new rules for globalization -- a fair globalization with development opportunities for all. Industrialized countries must fulfill their promises and commitments."
Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen told the opening ceremony that China is willing to work with UNIDO and other parties to jointly deepen South-South and triangular cooperation, tap into new opportunities in digital economy and green development and build an open, inclusive, fair and non-discriminatory environment for trade and investment.
UNIDO convenes its General Conference, its "supreme policymaking organ," every two years to decide on the organization's guiding principles, policies, budget and work program, according to its website. ■
