KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Malaysian government has delivered 4.6 tons of essential supplies to Redang Island in Terengganu state ahead of expected flooding, the social welfare department said on Monday.

This is part of preparations for floods that are expected to affect up to 1,000 people on the island, with the supplies being delivered by ship, the department's state director Mazura Ngah Abdul Manan told Bernama.

Terengganu state is home to several islands popular with tourists including Redang and Perhentian Island, which has received 2.9 tons of supplies last Friday as persistent adverse weather continued to affect the country's east coast.

The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy rains due to the Northeast Monsoon, which typically lasts from October to March, with strong winds and rough seas expected, in the northern states and the east coast area of the Southeast Asian country.
