JAKARTA, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Friday inaugurated a liquefied natural gas (LNG) production unit in Teluk Bintuni in the eastern province of West Papua.

The unit, with an annual production capacity of 3.8 million tonnes, will increase the total capacity of the British oil company BP's Tangguh facility to 11.4 million tons per year.

The mega-project will also employ a lot of workers who are local talents, Widodo said. "At present, 70 percent of the total number of operating workers in the project were from West Papua and Papua."

Tangguh LNG has been operating since 2009 and currently is the largest natural gas producer in the archipelagic country which aims to meet its national gas needs.
