MANILA, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology upgraded the magnitude of an offshore earthquake that hit Davao Occidental province in the southern Philippines on Wednesday morning from 5.8 to 6.1.

In an updated report, the institute said the quake, which occurred at 10:48 a.m. local time, hit at a depth of 173 kilometers, about 413 kilometers southeast of Balut island in Sarangani town.

The institute said the tectonic quake, which was felt in parts of the Mindanao island, will neither trigger aftershocks nor cause damage.

Last Friday, a 6.8-magnitude offshore earthquake, hitting about 34 km northwest of Sarangani town with a depth of 72 km, led to at least nine deaths, according to Philippine authorities.

The archipelagic Philippines has frequent seismic activities due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire".
