Fires kill 75, injure 184 in Myanmar

YANGON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Fire Services Department said Tuesday that a total of 75 people were killed and 184 others injured in fire accidents reported so far this year in the Southeast Asian country.

As of Nov. 21, a total of 1,245 fire accidents have been recorded, causing damage estimated to be at over 16 billion kyats (about 7.6 million U.S. dollars), Director of Myanmar Fire Services Department, U Thet Tun Oo told Xinhua.

There were 9,712 victims from the fire accidents during the cited period, with over 3,100 houses, 17 factories and 146 storehouses damaged, he said.

The causes of the fires included negligence, electrical faults, arson, and lightning.

U Thet Tun Oo said that efforts are being made in cooperation with the fire services departments at townships and villages to reduce fire outbreaks.

In the same period of last year, there were 1,400 fire accidents reported, causing over 6 billion kyats (about 2.8 million U.S. dollars) in damage and 85 deaths.
