MADRID, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Spanish professional cyclist Josu Etxeberria is in hospital after being hit by a car while on a training ride on Wednesday.
Etxeberria's Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team confirmed the news on social media, reporting that "Josu Etxeberria suffered an accident while training on Wednesday. The rider from Navarre suffered multiple injuries and is in the intensive care unit at the Navarra hospital."
The team added that "within the seriousness of his condition, he is conscious and is able to move his limbs."
According to reports, the accident happened at 13:30 local time close to the municipality of Iza and the police is investigating the causes of the accident. The cyclist needed to be airlifted to hospital, while the driver of the vehicle was uninjured.
23-year-old Etxeberria is considered to be one of the best young talents in his team and one of the most promising riders in Spain. One of his best results in 2023 was a fourth-place finish in the Ronde de l'Oise race, in which he finished in the top-10 in the overall classification. ■
