DOHA, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Qatar and South Africa agreed on Wednesday to enhance their political and economic relations, Qatar News Agency reported.

In a meeting between Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and visiting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the two sides discussed bilateral relations, particularly in the fields of economy, energy, investment, and education.

They also witnessed the signing of several memoranda of understanding in the fields of education, women empowerment, and bilateral consultations.

Qatar became South Africa's fifth-largest trading partner in the Middle East in 2022, Ramaphosa's spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said earlier, adding that "there is significant potential for further economic cooperation between the two countries."

The two countries will celebrate the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations next May.
