BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Milton Gimenez scored in each half as Banfield moved closer to a place in Argentina's Primera Division knockout stage with a 2-1 home win over Colon on Monday.
The 27-year-old striker opened the scoring by converting a penalty on the stroke of halftime but Ramon Abila put the visitors on level terms with a low finish from 12 yards just after the hour.
Gimenez was in inspired form and he restored his side's lead by bundling home from close range after German Conti's headed pass in second-half stoppage time.
The result leaves Banfield fourth in Group A, one point ahead of fifth-placed Instituto with two match days remaining. Colon are seventh, a point further back.
The top four sides from the competition's two groups will advance to the quarterfinals.
In other Primera Division fixtures on Monday, Godoy Cruz won 2-0 at home to Platense, Barracas Central were held to a 1-1 home draw by Rosario Central and Tigre cruised to a 3-0 home win at Belgrano. ■
