BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:

1. Shanghai Port clinches 2023 Chinese Super League title

Shanghai Port held Shandong Taishan to a 1-1 draw in a bad-tempered match to clinch their second Chinese Super League (CSL) title on October 29 with one round remaining.

Shanghai, the 2018 CSL champion, had led Shandong by five points at the top of the table prior to the duel, and it was no surprise that the match was brimming with an intense atmosphere, seeing five red cards shown down the stretch.


2. Olympic champion Chen crowned at badminton France Open

Olympic champion Chen Yufei clinched the women's singles title at the BWF France Open on October 29.

Chen, seeded third, bagged her second consecutive title following last week's triumph at the Denmark Open, edging past Chinese Taipei icon Tai Tzu-Ying 21-17, 22-20.

Chinese pairs also ascended the podium in two doubles events. Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin outplayed Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet of Hong Kong, China 21-17, 15-21, 21-12 in the mixed doubles. Meanwhile, Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning overcame Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand 26-24, 21-19, clinching the women's doubles title.


3. China seals men's relay gold at ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup

China took the men's 5,000m relay gold in the second leg of the 2023-2024 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Montreal on October 29, finishing the three-day event with two golds, one silver and one bronze medal.

China's team of Liu Shao'ang, Liu Shaolin, Lin Xiaojun and Sun Long competed with Canada, Kazakhstan and South Korea in Group A, and ultimately won in seven minutes and 3.468 seconds.

One day earlier, China defended their 2,000m mixed relay title, while Liu Shaolin and Lin Xiaojun finished second and third in the men's 500m event.


4. China women's football team fails to qualify for Paris Olympics

China drew with South Korea 1-1 in the 2024 Olympic women's football Asian qualifiers on November 1, with both teams failing to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

In the other Group B game, DPR Korea thrashed Thailand 7-0 to top the group with seven points, two points ahead of South Korea. China is in third with four points, while Thailand suffers three straight defeats.

According to the rule, three group winners, Australia, DPR Korea and Japan, as well as the best runner-up, Uzbekistan, with six points, have advanced to the final stage of the Asian qualifiers, which will decide the two qualifying teams for the Paris Olympics.


5. China men's and women's teams secure spots in Paris 2024 3x3 basketball

Six teams from China, Serbia, France, and the United States have booked their spots in the 3x3 basketball competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced on November 1.

The Serbian men's team, French women's team, and both men's and women's teams from China and the United States secured their placings based on the world rankings. According to the Olympic qualifying rules, the top three teams per gender on the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking as of November 1, 2023, secured tickets to Paris 2024.

Eight teams per gender will compete at Paris 2024, and the remaining five spots per gender will be contested in a series of Olympic qualifying tournaments in the first half of 2024, FIBA said.

The 3x3 Olympic event is scheduled to take place from July 30 to August 5, 2024, at Place de la Concorde in Paris.
