COLOMBO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced that the country has designated an area with a scenic view of the Kotmale reservoir in the central highlands for the establishment of the International Climate Change University (ICCU), the President's Media Division said in a press release on Friday.
During a forum held in Colombo on Thursday, Wickremesinghe said that the ICCU should be an international stakeholder university rather than a solely Sri Lankan institution, said the statement.
Saying that Sri Lanka's economic model would be built on competitiveness, digital transition, energy transition and the transformation to a green economy, the president pointed out that the country can benefit from its potential for excess green energy, including solar, wind power and hydrogen.
Sri Lanka's ambitious climate goals include presenting a climate prosperity plan at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28), with the aim of achieving net zero emissions by 2040, he said.
The implementation of the plan is estimated to require an investment of over 100 billion U.S. dollars over two decades, he said. ■
