DHAKA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Owing to ongoing labor unrest, paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) soldiers have been deployed in major industrial zones in and around Bangladeshi capital Dhaka to thwart any untoward incident.
Shariful Islam, public relations officer at BGB headquarters, told reporters Thursday that troops have been deployed in various industrial areas including Ashulia, Savar, Mirpur, Rampura, Abdullahpur, Tongi, Gazipur, Konabari.
Tens of thousands workers have been demonstrating for the past few days demanding a minimum basic salary of 23,000 taka (about 200 U.S. dollars) monthly, in Dhaka and elsewhere.
Amid the ongoing labor troubles, RMG (readymade garments) makers in Dhaka Thursday said they are contemplating a new wage proposal with a higher pay structure to the Minimum Wage Board next week.
At least 300 garment factories in and around Dhaka have reportedly suspended operations due to the ongoing labor movement, demanding higher wages. ■
