YAOUNDE, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Armed bandits have abducted about 50 people in less than three days in Cameroon's North region, local security sources said Wednesday.
The bandits ambushed and kidnapped roughly 20 people in Touboro locality of the region Tuesday, barely 48 hours after they kidnapped 30 others in the same locality, several security officials told Xinhua.
On Tuesday night, a security official in the region told Xinhua that searches were underway to find the whereabouts of the hostages.
Media outlets in the region reported that people were beginning to pack their belongings and escape from the locality, which has become notorious for abductions.
Since 2021, Cameroon's North region, which shares a porous border with the conflict-torn Central African Republic, has been at the center of violent kidnappings by heavily armed bandits who target children and people traveling on highways for ransom. ■
