PRAGUE, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Czech police said on Tuesday that they have arrested 11 foreign citizens accused of growing large quantities of cannabis in rented apartments in Prague.

The foreigners from the Balkan region have rented over 20 apartments in several districts in the Czech capital to set up cannabis nurseries, the police said in a statement.

The nurseries produced "enormous quantities" of cannabis with "four to five harvests per year," they said. Most of the cannabis was intended for export, for instance to Germany.

"The organizer of the criminal group traded at least 75 kilograms of dry marijuana at a price of 3,400 euros to 4,000 euros (3,600 to 4,240 U.S. dollars) per kilogram," the statement said.

During the operation, the police seized over 1,200 cannabis plants, 33 kilograms of dry cannabis, cultivation tents, firearms and forged documents.

The accused would face eight to 18 years in prison if convicted, according to the police.
