NEW DELHI, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Two people, including an eight-year-old child, were killed and three others injured Monday in a fire at a residential building in India's financial capital of Mumbai, police said.

The fire broke out inside a flat located in an eight-story residential building in the Borivali area of Mumbai.

"This afternoon fire erupted in a first-floor flat of the eight-story building of Veena Santur Cooperative Housing Society. Immediately after the distress call was received, fire engines and police teams were rushed to the spot," a police official said.

"Five people were removed to the hospital, of whom two were declared dead on arrival by the doctors and three others injured are undergoing treatment," he said.

Eyewitnesses told media smoke spread up to six floors of the building.

According to officials, it took several hours for the firefighters to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation to ascertain the cause of the blaze.

Earlier this month, a massive fire inside a multi-story building in the Goregaon area of the city killed seven people and injured over 40 others.

Chances of fire in Indian buildings are often high as owners usually ignore safety standards and store fuel and combustible materials in a haphazard manner.
