COLOMBO, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and 18 others injured when a bus veered off a road and fell down a precipice on Thursday in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, said the police.
Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said the rainy weather contributed to the accident.
The province has seen heavy rains for the past few days, and drivers must be mindful that the roads are wet and highly slippery, Thalduwa said.
Road crashes are common in Sri Lanka especially when it's raining.
The country's meteorology department has warned of rainy weather in the coming days.
Some 19,740 road accidents were reported in Sri Lanka last year with 2,485 people killed, according to the police. ■
