YANGON, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has set a target of earning about 16.5 billion U.S. dollars from export in the second half of the 2023-24 fiscal year through next March, media report said Wednesday.
The Southeast Asian country also aims to see an import value of 16 billion dollars during the six months from October 2023 to March 2024, the state-run daily Global New Light of Myanmar reported, quoting Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn as saying.
The minister also encouraged exporters to bolster exports and contribute to achieving a trade surplus during a meeting held in Yangon with exporters on Monday, the report said.
In the first half of the 2023-24 fiscal year, Myanmar earned over 7.58 billion dollars from export, while its import was valued at over 8.4 billion dollars, figures released by the Ministry of Commerce showed.
Myanmar does most of its foreign trade through sea routes as it has a long coastline. Its major trade partners include China, Thailand, Bangladesh and India.
The country mainly exports agricultural and animal products, fisheries, minerals and forest products, manufactured goods and others, while it imports capital goods, intermediate goods and consumer goods. ■
