JAKARTA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed after a passenger train hit a car in Indonesia's Lamongan regency in East Java province early Wednesday, local police said.
Lamongan police spokesperson Anton Krisbiantoro said the accident occurred at around 3 a.m. local time. The car carrying three people was allegedly trespassing at a railroad crossing with an unattended bar gate in Sukodadi subdistrict.
He said that the bar gate was built by local people and was regularly operated only between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m.
"Hit by the train, the car bounced off about 100 meters toward west of the railroad crossing," said Krisbiantoro, adding that the car was severely damaged.
Deadly road accidents, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions and reckless driving, are frequently reported in the Southeast Asian country. ■
