VILNIUS, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Lithuanian police said on Friday morning that schools and kindergartens in the country have received emails with bomb threats.

A total of 633 emails were received with threats to blow up schools and kindergartens in various cities of the country, Ramunas Matonis, a spokesman for the police, told local media ELTA.

The emails said explosives have been planted in schools or kindergartens and may explode.

Police officers are checking each place, said Matonis. "Nothing has been found so far."

Lithuania's intelligence agency, the State Security Department, said the threats across the Baltic country appeared "to be a targeted and coordinated attack carried out at the initiative of hostile states."

"The false reports and actions of a similar nature are aimed at creating tension and panic in society, disturbing and destabilising the work of institutions, and increasing mistrust," Aurelija Vernickaite, the intelligence agency's spokesperson, told the Baltic News Services.
