GENEVA, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council on Thursday adopted a resolution calling for establishing a knowledge hub to consolidate best practices and know-how in promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights.

The resolution, titled "Promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights within the context of addressing inequalities" and adopted without a vote, was initiated by a group of countries including China, Bolivia, Egypt, Pakistan, South Africa, Syria and Venezuela.

The resolution further called for a panel discussion during the 57th session of the Council to strengthen efforts in promoting these rights.

Emphasizing the impact of inequalities and discrimination on human rights, the resolution underscores the urgent need to alleviate extreme poverty to ensure the enjoyment of human rights and encourages international financial institutions to prioritize social spending and support developing countries.

The resolution also requested the UN secretary-general to strengthen the capacity of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights by creating additional positions funded through the regular budget, so as to enhance the office's work with gender balance and equitable geographical representation ensured, in alignment with its mandate related to economic, social and cultural rights.
