MONROVIA, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Vote counting commenced Wednesday in Liberia following the general polls in the West African country a day earlier.

The tally process began in the presence of candidates' agents and independent observers, Davidetta Lansanah, head of the National Elections Commission (NEC), said on Wednesday evening at a daily briefing in the national capital of Monrovia.

"The tallied results from magisterial offices are being progressively transmitted to the data center at the NEC headquarters, where they are being collated for the announcement," Lansanah told reporters, as well as domestic and international observers, at the briefing.

More than 2.4 million Liberians were registered to vote during the general elections on Tuesday, according to the NEC, which oversees the conduct of elections in all 15 counties of the country.

Incumbent President George Weah is seeking re-election, while former Vice President Joseph Boakai, leading the opposition, is challenging him.

The electoral body said on Tuesday night that there were no major incidents during the polls, except for a delay in voting in the southern part of the country due to heavy rains.
