China's first hydrogen fuel cell-powered boat completed its maiden voyage in Yichang City, central China's Hubei Province on Wednesday.

Powered by a 500-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell, the boat marks a breakthrough in the application of hydrogen fuel cells in inland waterway.

Relying on hydrogen fuel cells to provide power, the boat is said to have higher power generation efficiency and produces less emissions.

Compared to ships powered by traditional fossil fuel, the use of hydrogen is expected to replace 103.16 tonnes of oil every year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 343.67 tonnes.

49.9 meters long and 10.4 meters wide, the boat boasts a top speed of 28 kilometers per hour and a maximum cruise range of 200 kilometers.

After delivery, it will be used for transportation, inspection and emergency response in the Three Gorges Reservoir and between the Three Gorges and Gezhouba dams, the two major hydropower stations on the Yangtze River.
