CAIRO, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit on Wednesday said that vengeance against the people of the Gaza Strip contradicts international laws and wouldn't bring the aspired peace and security.

His comments came during two separate meetings with Antonio Tajani and Gabrielius Landsbergis, the visiting foreign ministers of Italy and Lithuania, the AL said in a statement.

The meeting concentrated on the ongoing escalations in the Gaza Strip and the necessity to stop the current war immediately to avoid expansion of escalation to a more dangerous and out-of-control stage, it added.

The chairman of the pan-Arab body said he "fully opposes the murder of civilians," urging more efforts should be exerted to protect the Palestinians.

Aboul-Gheit also called for settling the deep-rooted Palestinian-Israeli issue by unfreezing the political stalemate and promoting means to achieve the two-state solution.

According to the latest official Palestinian and Israeli figures, at least 1,078 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli army, while more than 1,200 Israelis were killed by Hamas since the start of the conflict on Saturday.
