BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping met with a U.S. congressional delegation led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in Beijing on Monday.

Xi said that the China-U.S. relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and how China and the United States get along will determine the future and destiny of humanity. Competition and confrontation do not conform to the trend of the times, still less can they help solve a country's own problems and the challenges facing the world.

China always believes that the common interests of China and the United States far outweigh their differences, and the respective success of China and the United States is an opportunity rather than a challenge to each other, Xi said.

He said the "Thucydides trap" is not inevitable, and the world is big enough to fully accommodate China and the United States' respective development and common prosperity. With deep economic integration, China and the United States are interdependent and can benefit from each other's development.

Xi said the post-pandemic global recovery, addressing climate change, and resolving international and regional hotspot issues all require coordination and cooperation between China and the United States. He said that as two major countries, China and the United States should show their great minds, vision, and responsibility, and properly handle their relationship in an attitude of being responsible to history, the two peoples, and the world.

Xi called on the two sides to deal with the relationship in the spirit of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation to improve the well-being of the two peoples, promote human progress, and contribute to world peace and development.
