JERUSALEM, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The EuroLeague basketball game between Italian champions Armani Milano and Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv, scheduled for Thursday, was suspended due to the worsening security situation in Israel, Maccabi and the EuroLeague said in separate statements on Sunday.
Since Saturday morning there has been fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, resulting in the EuroLeague second-round game in Milan being postponed at the request of Maccabi.
The EuroLeague also decided to postpone the game between Hapoel Tel Aviv and Lithuania's Wolves Vilnius in the EuroCup competition, which is organized by the EuroLeague.
The Group A second-round game was scheduled for Wednesday at the Shlomo Group Arena in Tel Aviv.
The EuroLeague stated its intention to closely follow the situation and, in collaboration with the affected teams, assess the most suitable alternatives for rescheduling the games, taking into consideration the available dates.
Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli Basketball Super League Administration suspended all Israeli league games, with some teams allowing their overseas players to leave Israel. ■
