MADRID, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Two events have been held recently in the Spanish capital Madrid to promote cultural exchanges between Spain and China, especially in the fields of literature and publishing.
The China-Spanish Civilization Exchange, Mutual Learning and Literature Publishing Forum held here on Tuesday, and the Mutual Translation Seminar for Chinese and Western Classical Literature Works on Wednesday -- as part of the 10th edition of the Spanish Book Fair, attracted numerous attendees from the two countries, including government officials and experts from publishing and literary circles.
"If you want to fully understand a nation or a country, you still need to read their books," said Huang Qiang, director of the People's Education Press of China.
As this year marks the 50 anniversary of China-Spain diplomatic relations, participants agreed that the publishing communities of both countries have maintained close connections on such aspects as copyright and intellectual property, and that these events present new opportunities for strengthening bilateral cultural exchange and cooperation.
"I have lived in China for two decades ... I would like those who have received me with such hospitality for almost 20 years to be able to read how I see their country," said Spanish writer and economist Julio Ceballos when speaking of his book about his experiences in China.
"I have made my own translations of classical Chinese poems, as I think Chinese classical poetry is one of the great gifts to humanity," Spanish writer Angela Vallvey told Xinhua. ■
