CANBERRA, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Australian government has outlined its long-term vision for the job market, identifying five key objectives for the future.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Monday released the federal government's landmark employment white paper and announced nine immediate steps the government will take to boost jobs and opportunities.
Speaking at a press conference in South Australia (SA), Chalmers said the white paper titled Working Future would help Australia achieve a "more dynamic and more inclusive" economy.
"This employment white paper is all about helping more Australians make the most of the big changes underway in our economy and in our society as well," Chalmers said.
"Our objective here is a more dynamic and a more inclusive labour market as part of a more dynamic and more inclusive economy where more workers and businesses and communities can adapt and thrive and benefit from change."
He said the government has committed to taking nine steps to prepare the economy for the future, including progressing a proposal for a National Skills Passport, smoothing the transition to work for welfare recipients and improving economic outcomes for Indigenous Australians.
The nine immediate steps were designed to help achieve five ambitious objectives for the job market set out in the white paper, namely sustained full employment, reignited productivity growth, sustainable wage growth, broadened opportunities and filled skills shortages.
The paper was developed over 12 months following the Jobs and Skills Summit in September 2022, which brought together employers, governments, unions and experts to help build a stronger economy.
"This is only the third time since the Second World War that a national government has set out a vision for work like this," Chalmers said. ■
