GAZA, Sept. 19, (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army on Tuesday killed a young Palestinian man during clashes near the eastern fence of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical and security sources said.
"Yousuf Radwan, a 25-year-old young man, was killed and nine others wounded by the Israeli army during clashes that erupted east of Khan Younis," the Hamas-run Health Ministry said in a press statement sent to Xinhua.
Palestinian security sources said that protests broke out in various places near the eastern fence border between the coastal enclave and Israeli cities.
The protesters burned tires and hurled stones toward Israeli forces stationed in the area, who fired live and rubber bullets and tear gas canisters in response, the sources added.
Israeli media outlets reported that at least 150 local Palestinians demonstrated in various areas near the fence along the Gaza Strip border, and launched incendiary balloons towards Israeli cities.
Over the past two weeks, the eastern fence of Gaza has been witnessing escalation between local Palestinians and Israeli soldiers, as Israeli media reported the riots were organized by the Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement as a way to express its anger at the Qatari rejection of raising its monthly funds.
Hamas, however, claimed that the protests were staged to express Gazan's solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli jails, as well as the Palestinians in the West Bank who have been suffering from "the ongoing Israeli violations." ■
