TEHRAN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The 17th International Exhibition of Plastics, Rubber, Machinery and Equipment kicked off in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Sunday.
The opening ceremony was attended by Oil Minister Javad Owji and his deputies, lawmakers as well as foreign ambassadors in Tehran.
A total of 560 domestic firms as well as 210 foreign companies have taken part in the event, according to a report published on the exhibition's website.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the oil minister said the petrochemical sector is a key industry of the country, which generated 16 billion U.S. dollars in export revenues in the previous Iranian calendar year which ended on March 20.
He stressed that "the petrochemical sector "cannot be sanctioned" owing to the rising global demand for the industry's upstream and downstream products.
Iran's petrochemical production capacity, according to CEO of Iran's National Petrochemical Company Morteza Shahmirzaei at the event, has reached 92 million tons per year.
During the event, which will run through Wednesday, 20 expert meetings and training workshops will be held, and several memoranda of understanding and contracts are expected to be signed, said the report. ■
