CHANGSHA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Capture an image of your tongue, and you'll promptly receive a comprehensive analysis report featuring tongue image attributes, diagnostic results and therapy advice. This technological breakthrough that utilizes extensive medical data and academic insights is the product of AthenaEyes, a Chinese AI company specializing in healthcare.

The driving force behind this efficient application is the computational prowess harnessed from an intelligent computing center developed by Dawning Information Industry Co., Ltd. (also known as Sugon). This center fuels the operations of over 20,000 applications from more than 100 enterprises in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province.

Unlike traditional computers, the intelligent computing center adopts an innovative liquid cooling technology to increase the power density of a single cabinet to 220 kW, which is four to eight times that of traditional air-cooled units.

"The computing center adopts an open architecture, which can underpin the transformation and upgrading of various industries," said Zhou Jingjing, deputy general manager of Sugon's subsidiary in Hunan.

According to a white paper released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, by the end of 2022, the total scale of China's computing power hit 180 EFLOPS, of which the general computing power and intelligent computing power accounted for about 76.7 percent and 22.8 percent, respectively.

The rapid development of AI large models has spurred the demand for intelligent computing power, which increased by 41.4 percent compared with last year.

The applications such as 5G, industrial internet, cloud computing and AI call for colossal computing power, said Fan Chun, a researcher from the Peking University Changsha Institute for Computing and Digital Economy.

"For example, efficient computing power is in dire need when cloud computing and AI process and analyze large amounts of sensor data generated through industrial internet applications," Fan added.

In 2022, China launched the "East Data, West Computing" plan -- a mega project to establish eight national computing hubs and 10 national data center clusters to channel more computing resources from the country's eastern regions to its less developed yet resource-rich western areas.

The country's computing industry has been actively promoting exchanges and cooperation among partners along the industrial chain to build a coordinated and win-win industrial ecology.

At the recently held 2023 World Computing Conference, China Electronics Corporation and Huawei launched the PengTeng Ecosystem series program, aimed at in-depth cooperation in industrial computing standards, partnership programs, and technical collaboration.

The scale of China's computing industry hit 2.6 trillion yuan (about 362.2 billion dollars) in 2022, according to the conference, which concluded Saturday.

"The efficiency and service quality of economic and social operations can also be significantly improved with the introduction of computing power into various applications," Fan said.

By leveraging cloud computing and AI technology, we can achieve intelligent city management, enhance industrial manufacturing and boost healthcare services, Fan added. Enditem
