MONTEVIDEO, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Midfielder Emiliano Martinez has been omitted from Uruguay's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) said on Sunday.
The 24-year-old, who plays his club football for Denmark's FC Midtjylland, suffered a left hip injury, the AUF said in a statement published on social media.
The entity did not immediately name a replacement for the former Nacional de Montevideo playmaker.
"Emiliano Martinez will not be able to take part in the match against Ecuador [on Tuesday] and will return to his club to continue his recovery," the AUF said.
The clash in Ecuador's capital Quito comes after Uruguay began their South American zone qualifying campaign with a 3-1 home victory over Chile on Friday. ■
