TEHRAN, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani on Monday strongly condemned an attack on the country's embassy in Paris, the Iranian Students' News Agency reported.

In a weekly press conference held in Iran's capital Tehran, Kanaani said the attack by "anti-Iranian counterrevolutionary groups" on Saturday had caused minor damage to the consular section of the embassy building.

Kanaani said that Iran has conveyed its protest to the French government in writing and via meetings, and French Ambassador to Iran Nicolas Roche told the Iranian side that the French government strongly condemned the attack and had opened an investigation to find and apprehend the assailants.

France is required by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations to guarantee the security of foreign diplomatic missions on its territory, Kanaani added.

Iranian news network Press TV reported that the assailants burned tires on Saturday in front of the entrance leading to the consular section of the Iranian embassy, slightly damaging the door, adding that the fire was quickly put out by police and firefighters and the embassy is now operating normally.
