WELLINGTON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 hit northeast of Kermadec Islands, New Zealand, at 21:09 local time (0909 GMT) on Friday, according to New Zealand research institute GNS Science.

No injuries or property damage have been reported.

The epicenter, with a depth of 100 km, was initially determined to be at 33.1 degrees south latitude and 178.7 degrees west longitude, GNS Science said.

There is no tsunami threat from the quake, according to the National Emergency Management Agency.

The Kermadec Islands are about 900 km northeast of Auckland and have no permanent residents. Located on the western edge of the Kermadec Trench, the islands consist of dozens of volcanic islands and are characterized by high levels of seismic and volcanic activities.
