COLOMBO, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved the purchase of 50 electric buses for passenger services in the country's Western Province, a statement from the government information department here said on Tuesday.
The statement listing the decisions made at a cabinet meeting said that these buses would be operated as a public-private partnership project.
It said the increase of the number of electric buses to 200 will help enable rendering general transport facilities in more routes.
Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena recently said that by 2048 Sri Lanka will integrate electric buses into the public transport fleet, aligning with global sustainability goals.
The President's Media Division said earlier this month that the global positioning system (GPS) tracking and e-ticketing facilities will be soon introduced to enhance the convenience and reliability of the public transport system. ■
