JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Three development projects in east Afghanistan's Nangarhar province have been completed to provide locals with access to irrigation water and transportation facilities, state media reported Sunday.
According to the Bakhtar News Agency, the projects with a cost of 3 million afghanis (about 35,300 U.S. dollars) were provided by international organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme.
Under the projects, local authorities constructed 4 km of roads, cleaned 1,400 meters of irrigation canals, and built up a retaining wall in the Kot District of Nangarhar, the media organization said.
The projects have made it simpler to carry passenger and commercial motorcades, helped supply water to hundreds of acres of farmland, and prevented the destruction of dwellings and farmland from potential floods, Bakhtar quoted Mawlawi Qesmatullah Mubarez, director of the Rural Rehabilitation and Development Department of Nangarhar, as saying.
War-ridden Afghanistan is vulnerable to earthquakes and floods, and the eastern provinces are among the most frequently stricken regions. ■
