BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Lucas Passerini scored a second-half winner as Belgrano began the second phase of Argentina's 2023 Primera Division season with a 2-1 home victory over Estudiantes on Thursday.
Passerini opened the scoring from the penalty spot but Mauro Boselli equalized with a close-range finish after a Jorge Rodriguez corner.
Center-forward Passerini restored his team's lead when he drilled a cool finish into the bottom right corner just after the hour.
In other opening round fixtures, Boca Juniors will host Platense on Saturday while first stage champions River Plate are scheduled to meet Argentinos Juniors away on Sunday.
The second phase sees the Primera Division's 28 teams divided into two groups of 14. A round robin format will be followed by a knockout stage with the final to be played in December. ■
