DAMASCUS, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- An explosion rocked an arms depot in a Syrian military base northeast of the capital Damascus on Tuesday, a war monitor reported.
The explosion took place inside a weapons depot of the Syrian army's 81-Brigade in the town of Al-Ruhaybah right after midnight, sparking a fire that raged for about two hours, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
It said the Israeli intelligence agencies were responsible for the explosion, adding it was carried out from inside the depot.
The explosion followed a similar one early on Sunday, which hit a depot of the Lebanese Hezbollah group in a mountainous area near the Syrian-Lebanese border, about 20 km southwest of Damascus. The observatory said the Sunday explosion was the result of "an Israeli intelligence operation." ■
