HONG KONG, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's population was 7,498,100 in the middle of the year 2023, up 2.1 percent from mid-2022, the Census & Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said on Tuesday.
According to the statistics, the population increase was mainly attributable to a net inflow of 174,000 Hong Kong residents during the period, with an inflow of 31,000 one-way permit holders and a net inflow of 143,000 other Hong Kong residents.
There were 32,600 births and 54,600 deaths, resulting in a natural population decrease of 22,000.
With the gradual relaxation of COVID-19 control measures since the second half of 2022, many Hong Kong residents who stayed outside of the territory during the pandemic returned to Hong Kong. Meanwhile, some people were admitted to Hong Kong through various schemes, resulting in a large net inflow of Hong Kong residents in the first half of 2023, a spokesperson for the HKSAR government said. ■
