CANBERRA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Australia is in a prime position to develop a domestic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry according to the national science agency.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) on Thursday released a roadmap for developing a local SAF industry in collaboration with Boeing Australia.
According to the roadmap, Australian demand for jet fuel is expected to increase 75 percent by 2050.
It found that Australia is currently sitting on enough resources to produce almost 5 billion liters of SAF by 2025 - enough to cover 60 percent of jet fuel demand for that year.
SAF is produced from renewable sources such as agricultural waste, vegetable oils and animal fats, meaning it has significantly lower carbon emissions than conventional fuel. ■
