RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Sergio Rochet converted the decisive spot-kick as Internacional beat River Plate on penalties to advance to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Having won the first leg 1-0 in Buenos Aires, River Plate fell behind overall after Gabriel Mercado and Alan Patrick struck in the space of eight second-half minutes for the Brazilian outfit.
But the Argentine side rallied and Robert Rojas made it 3-3 on aggregate with a 90th-minute strike at Inter's Beria-Rio stadium.
Both teams converted their first six shots in the shootout but Rojas, both a hero and villain, missed with his team's 10th attempt and Rochet subsequently held his nerve as Internacional progressed to the last eight.
Elsewhere in the round of 16 on Tuesday, Bolivar advanced by defeating Athletico Paranaense 5-4 on penalties after the scores were tied 3-3 overall and Fluminense beat Argentinos Juniors 2-0 at the Maracana stadium to prevail 3-1 on aggregate. ■
